Pup wellbeing:

A hidden summer danger

As temperatures rise, we’re all looking for ways to help our dogs (and ourselves!) stay cool.

Plenty of pups love to splash in ponds, lakes, or streams, but make sure you keep your eyes open before you let your four-legged friend loose in the water. During the warmer months, still water can become hazardous due to the presence of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), which can be fatal for dogs.

Slow moving water

This toxic algae forms in still or slow-moving water, and blooms during hot weather. It may look like a green, scummy film on the surface or appear as pea-soup coloured water – not overly inviting for humans, but a bounding pup is unlikely to pay much attention before splashing in.

When a dog swims in or drinks contaminated water, even a small amount of blue-green algae can cause severe poisoning. Symptoms include vomiting, seizures, weakness, drooling, breathing difficulties and collapse, and come on very quickly. Tragically, some cases result in death within hours.

Cooling down, safely

If your dog is used to cooling off in natural water sources during the summer, it’s time to consider safer alternatives. Even if a body of water looks clean, there’s no way to guarantee it’s free of blue-green algae without proper testing. Last summer saw a number of cases across Sussex, so keep vigilant, and be sure to share if you spot anything that looks suspicious.

Of course, a summertime splash isn’t the only way to beat the heat this summer. There are plenty of safe ways to help keep your pooch cool as the mercury rises:

  • Walk early or late: Avoid the midday sun and take your dog out during cooler hours.
  • Reduce intensity: Shorter, gentler walks are better on hot days, and avoid high-energy play when temperatures rise.
  • Skip the hottest days: A missed walk won’t kill your dog, but overheating might. Keep them indoors and well hydrated on the hottest days.

Enjoy a safe summer splash

For an extra cooling treat, why not bring your dog to enjoy a pamper session at the Pristine Paws Dog Wash & Dry units, located across Kent and Sussex?

Our self-service stations offer a refreshing, temperature-controlled cooling wash that's ideal for summer. When the temperature rises, we adjust the heat to make sure the water brings your pup’s core temperature down, providing a safe, fun, and effective way to cool your dog without the risks of open water. Plus, you’ll leave with a clean, fresh-smelling pup, with no risk of muddy splashes or questionable pond smells…

Whether your dog needs a quick rinse after a walk or a full shampoo and dry, the stations are easy to use and open daily for your convenience.

Have a safe, sunny summer with your pup!
