Pup wellbeing:
Ready, set, wag!
Our top tips for running with your dog.
As the leaves turn golden and the air gets crisp, we’re thrilled to be joining the autumn ‘Run the Seasons’ Canirun event at the Cowdray Estate, on October 11th.
At Pristine Paws, we believe that shared experiences like these are the heart of a happy, healthy bond between you and your dog. But before you lace up your trainers and clip on the lead, let’s talk wellbeing…
Build up to the big event
Going from a casual stroll around the park to a full-on Canirun can be overwhelming for your dog, physically and mentally. Ease them into the experience by including them in your regular runs first, gradually increasing distance and pace so they’re in top-top conditioned and confident before taking on a lively group event.
Confidence in crowds
Is your dog comfortable around other dogs, people and the buzz of an event? If not, it’s worth doing a few practice outings to busy parks or trails. A confident dog is a happy dog, (and importantly, a safe one too).
Work on your warm up
It may seem like your pup is bouncing and ready to go, but just like humans, dogs need a gentle warm-up to get their muscles moving and joints loosened. A brisk walk before the main event helps prevent injury and gets your pup in the zone.
Lead the way
Before race day, make sure you inspect your dog’s harness and lead for wear and tear. A secure, well-fitting harness gives you better control and keeps your dog comfortable throughout the run. The Canirun is a firmly ‘leads-on’ event (can you imagine the chaos if it wasn’t?!) so it’s important that all kit is in tip-top condition.
Fitness first
Running isn’t for every dog. If your pup is very young, a senior or has any underlying health conditions, check with your vet before signing them up for an event. Their wellbeing always comes first, and whilst we absolutely love meeting all your pups, we’d much rather see you running alone than have a medical emergency.
Post-run pampering
After the mud, the miles and of course, the tail-wagging triumph, swing by the Pristine Paws DIY Dog Wash and Dry station on site, for the ultimate pup pamper. Offering spa-like treat Ed’s, or a simple warm shower to get rid of all the mud, the team will be on hand to offer assistance (and plenty of treats!) to help your pup feel fresh, fabulous and ready for a well-earned nap.
See you at Cowdray!
